Gift Cards always work put $50.00 to Best Buy or somewhere and wrap it.

A great gift for a 17 year old is a gas card! If you are worried about spending enough, there is no limit on a gas card. All of us drivers are feeling the pressure of rising gas prices and what better for a new driver to get a few tanks of gas as a gift. They can also be used to buy snacks in the gas stores.

What's his personality? This is the question that really solves your question.
Is he a skater boi? Is he a video gamer? Is he a reader? Is he a Do-It-Yourself guy? Is he a Nascar fan? Is he a Hungry boy?
Get him a gift accordingly. Skating gear for the skater boi, video games for the video gamer, books for the reader, tools for the Do-It-Yourself guy, Nascar gear for the Nascar fan, gift card from his favorite restaurant for the Hungry boy. CDs for the music fan or an iPod. You'll know better once you get shopping.
