Why is it that Gays and Lesbians want to get married.. but so many heterosexual couples dont?
I am not bashing, I was raised in the gay community.. long before Rosie made it "cool" to be gay and have kids. My mom was a pioneer in our city for helping to found the local G&L center, for starting support groups for gay parents etc...
I know that if I was to lose my husband or we were to divorce I would not want anything to do with being married again. I have no problem with the idea of just living with some one.
I know all the legal issues involved in reference to POA, medical & FMLA benafits and taxes.
I just find it ironic...

Hmmm, well do you consider the fact that we aren't even given the option to be relevant? It's one thing to not exercise your options, it's a completely different thing to have never been given the opportunity to choose.
And as far as the Other comment that someone else made about the "need for the support groups", why don't you have someone fling rocks at you at every given opportunity(both metaphorical rocks as well as a few physical ones) and let's see how well YOU deal with it.

Equal rights, and if only 10% of the popluation is infact gay it is harder to find a partner based on numbers. That may make a person more commited plus the social stigma of what they go through to be together.

if 2 consenting, unrelated adults love each other and are committed to each other, it shouldn't matter what gender, race, religion or culture they are. they should have the same legal rights and benefits as any other couple does. it's a matter civil rights. we're still "second class" citizens who don't have the same rights as others. but I mostly, I just want to be able to marry the person I love and want to spend the rest of my life with...and it shouldn't matter if she's a woman!

it is not so much being married, the desire of being married is not affected by their sexual orientation. It's their personality that makes them want to get married. I don't see myself getting married, yet I want to have the right that is availabe to straight people. It's all about civil rights. We're fighting the same fight black people faced fifty years ago.

it's a question of civil rights honey..nothing more. Everyone in America deserves to be treated the same--and also because marriage has a 50/50 chance of working nowadays

Because gays and lesbians want the financial benefits and want social acceptance for a behavior that is dysfunctional.
Roise has done more damage to being gay than making it "cool." She is annoying and nasty, regardless of her sexuality.
If being gay and lesbian is "normal," why the need for support groups?

It is fashionable and temporary.
Once they see the true hidden disease of marriage in the US, they will quickly seek a divorce. But not without much pain and suffering.
