This song was written in the 1970s when people were sad most of the time. The only thing that made people happy back then was getting high. The reason people were unhappy was because this is when America was making really bad cars and people had to always go back to the dealers to get their new cars fixed. This was before the Japanese came in strongly and supplied us with great cars. Jackie always won at what she did- but she bought an American car and was always blue about it because it broke all the time. Also having Jimmie Carter as president even compounded the problems.

Now, wouldn't you be blue too, if you were a daredevil living in the Ozark mountains? Not much work for daredevils in that part of the world...
Regardless, it's a good song by an underappreciated band.
