I like to buy the stuff that people always want but can never bring themselves to buy. So I guess its the stuff people want but feel they dont need.

Depends on the person. If there's something practical that I know they really want, I'll buy it. If not, with my family I just try to figure out what they would like the most, but with friends it's usually something stupid that will make them laugh.

I think it depends on the situation of the person receiving the gift.
If the person has plenty of money and lots of stuff they want, a nice to have will be more appreciated.
If its someone who is tight for money or is just starting out with very few things, the essential and practival stuff would be more appreciated.

Both. Some people need stuff, but giving something they want as well is always good.
