how about a paper on which of the two Holiday's has the monopoly on the modern day market.....Mass marketing my man.. Think about it. Do you spend more at Christmas.. with all the shiny lights and choir music? Don't get me wrong, I love it. My house is always decorated for both Holiday's. More so on Halloween, but that's a different issue... Hope it sparks some thoughts.....
Best of luck!

The best way to write a paper is to use this simple plan...Tell em what your gonna tell em then tell then tell em what you told em. Have an opening paragraph and discuss what your going to say in the following paragraphs. In the next paragraph compare one aspect of the two holidays...like the weather during each of the holidays. In the thrid paragraph compare another difference like the traditions that go with each holiday. In the fourth paragraph compare one last difference like the meanings of each holiday. Finally a conclusion paragraph that will recap what you just said. Tell em what your gonna tell em, then tell em, then tell em what you told em. This works for every paper!

Both are conversions of Ancient Pagan holidays. So you could compare the customs that came from the older traditions and how they were converted to the newer version of the holiday. For example. Trick or treating started by ancient Pagans to remember their ancestors. They would dress up like people who had died and go from door to door to help remember them. They were given treats to feed them from door to door. The Christians had changed to custom to be that people should dress up like their favorite or Patron Saint.
For Christmas, Santa Claus is seen as St Nicholas the bishop who gave treats and toys to children. But the icon of Santa Claus started with the Pagan Holly King. He and the Oak King battle twice a year on each of the solstices. The Holly King dies on Yule, the Winter Solstice and returns to battle to Oak King again on Litha, the Summer Solstice.

Focus on the pagan/heathen beliefs that form the basis of the two holidays. They are also both thought to have originated with the ancient Germanic tribes (Scandinavians, Germans (of course), Frisians, etc), so you may want to examine cultural imagery that the two share.
At least, that's what I'd do.
