It's nearly impossible for the pump to push every last little bit of water and, consequently, gunk, up and out the drain line when the cleaning cycle ends. So there's always a small amount that drains back into the bottom area of the tub, and then just lays there till you do another load of dishes. Try substituting baking soda in the soap tray and run a complete cycle. That should deodorize the whole interior of the tub and keep it fresh smelling. Once a month would be great, every other month would probably help considerably. Other than that, there's no real maintainance that you can do, other than wipe the outside off with a damp cloth.

If you use it regularly, you don't need to do anything because you're always cleaning with it.

If you have a filter on your dishwasher, it is recommended that you clean it twice a year. (I just learned that.)
