im really not sure which vehicle is best for my needs. i need a spacious cab for the family but i need a cargo bed for odds and ends around the property. im leaning toward the avalanche because of the versatility but that could also be a hassle switching back and forth. also i will be moving to the hills of west virginia and just have a feeling i will fit in better with a regular type truck instead of a city boy showing up with more of a yuppie type ride. what to do?

towing is not an issue. it will be more of a residential ride than a commercial one but snow could be a factor up there on the narrow country roads and at times i may need to haul the 4 wheeler somewhere or get a pile of dirt or gravel.

i will be doing a lot of traveling alone in it on long work trips so driver comfort an issue as well.

The Avalanche has a better weight distribution (as stated) BUT since you're using it to drive around to work and stuff, I personally say Silverado. I have a 2001 with a 5.3 V8 (224,000 miles) that still gets 21 mpg highway. Avalanches only get about 18 mpg highway. so if that's an issue, I'd go with the Silverado. Both are great trucks, and you won't regret your decision. Hope my input helped, and good luck!

IMO the Silverado is the clear choice. Reason being that hauling anything beyond groceries in a Avalanche is pointless. If you want to haul a load of anything you use a truck not a half a truck (HEHE). The new Silverados ride great, they look nice and have as many if not more creature comforts on the inside than most newer cars. If you don't need a big truck the Colorado is a nice rig too and is a capable hauler as well.

The Silverado and Avalanche are the same GMT 800 platform, meaning with the obvious body differences, they are the same frame and drive system underneath. Both are available with autotrac 4WD and I would certainly recommend 4WD for snow. Most 2002 and newer Silverados and Avalanches come with locking (rear) differentials on both the 2wd and 4wd models. Only the Silverado SS is available in AWD, but I doubt that's what you're looking for. As long as you're not buying a base-level vehicle, it should have the locking rear diff. Look for the G80 code on the sticker on the inside of the glove box. If it says G80, it is a locking diff. Other than that, it's up to you which body style to go with. I will say that the Avalanche with the WBH (without body hardware) package looks better than the ones with all the plastic on them. WBH Avalanches became available in late 2003. I personally own a 2005 Silverado Z71, and would recommend it over the Avalanche.

by the sounds of it, if i were you id go with the silverado extended cab. the ext cab will provide plenty of room for your family, and will give ya a place to take a nap on the long road trips. also parts for the silverado are more readily availible as are performance upgrade kits.what you may want to look into is a limited slip for the rear end. a full locker can throw you into a tail spin ( slide ),i have owned several trucks,2 of which were 2 whl drive, and i grew up in new england, for extra traction add weight to the very rear of the truck, right next to the tail gate, even weight dist, wont help you.

If you have to choose one with 2WD, take the Avalanche - it has better weight distribution especially over the drive wheels. I love pickups but they suck in snow. So does the Avalanche but it sucks less. If at all possible, get 4WD or even better all-wheel drive (not sure but I think only the Avalanche has that).

i'd go with the avalanche. they have better weight distribution so there will be more weight over the rear tires, plus you can still put some sandbags or something back there to make it even better. I didn't know avalanches came in 2wd.
