i've heard that a good amp is more crucial to good tone rather than a good guitar.
for example: plugging a standard strat into a nice, all-tube amp will sound better than a $3,000 les paul plugged into an inferior, solid-state amp.

That's true and also consider that some really good guitarists tend to adjust their guitar tone themselves. Brian May from Queen practically builds his own. Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhodes use to always fix their guitars for " the sound".

Very ture, but the adverse should also be considered; a $3,000 guitar through a $100 will sound like a $100 guitar. Your best bet is to hit a large music store, and plug your dream guitar through several differnt types of amps, and or processors. Your sound is only going to be as good as you and your gear.

P.S. I've got an aaaammmmaaazing!!! sounding mexican strat that only cost me $300. Seek and you shall find

Total B.S. Many more factors affect overall tonal quality. I've heard expensive guitars through expensive amplification sound like total crap. My entire rig(guitar, amplification, and stompboxes) costs under $1000.00 and you would never know it.

the guitar, the amp, and your dynamics will all be factors. the more you tweak them all, the more of a great tone you will get.
