Sounds a little earily to be trying to stretch My wife and I were told to let him feed when he wants to. The number of times per day will start to go down in time. My wife had a rough time with it.

A 5 week old don't realize anything first of all. If your baby is hungry feed him. There is no stretching feeding times at this age. Usually about every 1 1/2 - 2 hrs you will be feeding. If the baby continues to try, maybe something else is wrong. Try Mylicon drops for a tummy ache.

At this age you need to feed every 2 hours. More if needed. They are in a growing peak. Do not feed any less during this time, it is not healthy. They need all the nutrition they can get. I know it is tiring, but it is part of being a parent. I highly recommend going to www.babycenter.com and joining the babycenter board to talk to other moms with babies born the same month and year as yours. It helped me a lot.
You do not start to decrease the feedings until about 3 months old. And even then, when they are hungry, feed them! Please go to babycenter.com and research info regarding feeding.

I know it is very stressful at this age. At 5 weeks you need to feed any and every time he is hungry. Not only to meet his nutritional needs, but also to meet his neurological and emotional needs. Every time you respond appropriately to his cries you let him know that he matters and how to communicate. His feeding so often will end soon. His feeding WILL spread out more eventually. I try to remind myself when I start to feel stressed that this age will be over so soon and I will never have this chance to bond in this way again. Let some of the housework go, and sleep when he sleeps.
Hang in there mommy. You are doing something that can't be replaced. It is worth it in the end to give him what he needs when he needs it.

You should NOT be stretching out feedings with a newborn. They generally eat every 2-3 hours. Perhaps he or she is not getting enough the first time.

you cant feed your baby when it suits you, he is letting you know he is hungry when he cries
however, if you are finding he is demanding feeds every single hour, then you need to take him to a doctor... he could be crying for other reasons.
