Is this an active or a passive repeater?

What will help a lot is putting your phone in to Field Debug mode through the Engineering menu. All sprint phones have this capability built in but I need to know the model number to give you exact directions. The code to get into the menu is 040793. This screen gives you a super accurate signal meter.

On the outdoor end, you should have a directional antenna, usually a yagi with 10 elements or so. Put it up as high up as you can, away from obstructions and if you have the means to hook it up directly to your phone, do so and peak the signal using the field test screen. The yagi is attached to some low loss coax and will run either into a bidirectional amplifier for an active repeater or just directly into the indoor antenna. The indoor antenna, especially in an active repeater system, should be kept as far away from the outdoor antenna as possible with as much blocking the two as possible. Place the indoor antenna in a central location if it is omnidirectional. If it is a directional antenna like a 180 degree patch, you want to have it on the far wall (in relevance to the outdoor antenna) pointing in the direction you wish to cover. If you do not have an adapter to hook that yagi directly up to your sprint phone, then if you have a helper, have him go out and turn the antenna while you sit by the indoor end and watch the signal meter. Yell when it hits the highest peak ;-)
