I rent a car about 12 times last 3 years (about 80 days) and they had always unlimited millage. If I pay before taxes $35/day, I don't feel guilty to do 100 milles/day but if it is $15/day (or less) as in Los Angeles, I feel that I am wrong to do 100-150 milles/day.

To avoid to frustrate the car rental companies, what should be a fair total of daily millage if I pay $15 or $35 a day?

unlimited. If you are paying any amount of money for unlimited mileage then drive it unlimited miles. Drive it 24 hours a day if you want. That is what you are paying for. Or you can drive it 5 miles if thats all thats needed. You should drive however much you need to.

Why would you feel guilty? They have unlimited mileage for a reason.
Believe me, if they weren't making money they wouldn't do it.

Guilt? If they didn't want you to rent, they wouldn't be in business. They're still making money. Its a 4-wheel-drive by definition :-)
