The martial arts idea is a good one. Involvement in any sport is going to build confidence, teach determination, build mental/physical ,endurance, and gain respect from peers. Perhaps the simple question is whether it should be a team sport, or an individual sport. Check out all that the school has to offer, and see what he likes. Confidence building at home can begin today by challenging him to do push ups, sit ups, jogging, sprinting. Keep a log book to chart results.

Any art will do - it's more a matter of the focus of the instructor. Since you stated that you aren't particularly interested in physical development, I hope you realize that if you are considerably out of shape and overweight, any art will be strenuous to you. However, if you're just wanting to find an art that you don't have to do intensive physical development to be competent in, I'd suggest an aiki art. Aikido, Aikijutsu, and the like would work. Competition arts (which is how most striking arts are taught) will require more physical conditioning, since you're competing against others who are doing so. The same will be true of Judo and any MMA, since these are inherently competitive.

If I told you you would not believe me. So what I will say is you are more than a boy and you won't be a boy for long soon your muscles will develop and with practice and attentive patients so too will your brain. trust me on this change is certain.

Be yourself and your confidence with be with you. Embrace you and let the sun shine on your face prove nothing to anyone just be.

See if he is interested in the martial arts. Martial arts training will, over time, develop his focus, discipline, and confidence. Do your homework on the different styles- pick one that fits with what HE wants to accomplish with his training (self-defense, competition, etc.) Good luck.
