FIRST OFF - lava lamps can get extremely hot, caution needs to be used as to where you place it, and whether or not children are near it or able to reach it.
Second, the new lava lamps use a non-toxic substance in them, but the older lamps are poisonous - do NOT drink the contents of a lava lamp anyways.
Third, the new and old lava lamps can only take just so much heat, so do NOT use a higher wattage bulb than recommended - it can burst, shatter, or leak, any of which is a bad thing.

The worst that Ive seen happen is the bulb burns out, or the lava hardens and sits at the bottom...

I think so. The outside gets too hot. I just let my daughter display it. She sometimes plugs it in but only when he little brother isn't home. If you ask me my sister just wasted her money on that thing.

They can get very hot, so don't touch a lit one.
Also electrical, so don't put one in the shower.
Might be dangerous if you ate one...
