JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Robert Gates, the incoming U.S. secretary of defense, on the Iraq war and confirming Israel has nuclear arsenal. Some Israelis were not peased to hear Gates mention what U.S. administrations have long avoided uttering in public -- that the Jewish state has the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal.

During his Senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday, Gates speculated on why Iran might be seeking the means to build an atomic bomb. "They are surrounded by powers with nuclear weapons: Pakistan, the Russians.the Israelis and us," he said. According to recently declassified documents, the U.S. knew Israel had nuclear weapons but opted against insisting that its ally come clean on the capability and accept international regulation.By not declaring itself to be nuclear armed, Israel also skirts a U.S. ban on funding countries that proliferate weapons of mass destruction. It can thus enjoy more than 2 billion in annual military and other aid from Washington.

If the US truly wants peace in the middle east then it must stop all aid, economic and military, to Israel. The interesting point concerning Israel's nuclear arsenal is that Israel wouldn't hesitate using nukes against the US if it served Israel's purpose. BTW "norhollyw", do you know that "Chertoff" in Russian means "of the devil?" Quite appropriate eh?

All countries want to have the ability to protect themselves AND destroy their enemies. It is human nature to want to arm oneself with the meanest weapon available, to show force and exercise force.

I have no problem when governments [of level headed, balanced, parliamentary or democratic] have power at their disposal because they are structured to answer for their actions by their own people. What creates unsettled situations are governments run by dictators, theocratic leaders, and ideologists that put agendas in front of common sense and to the good of all.

I back Israel; always have and always will. They are America's greatest ally. If they have something that keeps all of their warmonger neighbors from pouncing on them and destroying them, then it's fair and right. Israel has always shown restraint toward the aggressive actions of others.

Israel is like the US's spoiled only child:
She's always right.
Never gets yelled at for picking on others.

The US government has been bought off with AIPAC (a zionist lobby group) bribes, where we can't even admit the obvious without fear!
Enough with Israel and her machinations. A detriment to the US.
