Ricky, it's because they looked at the Cards on paper, only, this year. And really, honestly, so did I, back in March, April.
But the Cardinals have one very important intangible thing which was going for them: The will, the belief in theirselves, to win.
The Cubs beat us, 11 out of 19 games this past season. The Astros with all that pitching, beat us 9 of 17, too. >>ouch<<
We Cardinals DID benefit from the weakness of the Division, as well as the dominance of other teams over our division rivals, you have got to admit that, Ricky. BUT, no one can deny that the Cardinals' pitching and their hitting came around at the right time this year. **In the years past, especially 2004, and winning JUST 105 games that year, both the Astros' pitching came around, got tuned up in that tense National League Championship series, and then, the Cards ran into a real Buzzsaw, the Red Sox, winners of 4 straight over the Yanks in their Championship series, to make for a wonderful, though bizzare World Series!!
But, hell, that's Baseball for ya.....
The Cardinals of 2006 were written off early, when Mulder went whacky, couldn't be counted upon for a win in his starts, and the off-season trades--WTF?? Sidney Ponson, Junior Spivey, Juan Encarnacion??? I mean, when I saw these trades, I nearly fainted last March.
Thus, no one thought the Cards would have a chance, especially agianst the Astros' Clemmons, Pettite, fat-boy Oswalt, and the Cubs' Maddux, Zambrano and Woods?
A second place team, at best. But, that's what's great about Our game, the little things, the intangibles, those things that happen after 9:30pm at night, in the late 7th or 8th innings...
Oh, and having a Pujols, a Rolen, an Edmonds and a Molina helped a little, too.
Aint Baseball just the very best Game ever??

The Cards did have a good enough team though. Anyone who says otherwise is like someone saying "the sky isn't blue."
Were their teams more talented overall than the Cardinals this year? Sure.
Were one of those teams the Tigers? Probably.
But the Cards have been on both sides of this. In 2004, the Cardinals were the best team in baseball and lost to the Red Sox. The Red Sox deserved it. And the Cardinals deserved it in '06, without a doubt.
The Cardinals like to be the underdog and they sure as heck fed off that during the postseason this fall.

It might be because they were 2 games above .500 in the regular season and .500 is absolute mediocrity. It might be the way that Houston nearly overtook them on the final weekend of the season. It might be the way Detroit ran away with their division, looking impressive in the process.Victories since 2000 doesn't really mean much,if it did why then did the Cardinals not win the World Series every year since? If victories and division titles meant all that much,we'd be talking about Atlanta. They won more division championships than any other team in the same time period. The Tigers bats went cold, their pitching left them and their defense was offensive, while the Cardinals got hot at the right time and simply outplayed what on paper looked like the better team."On paper" doesn't always win the games.

because they didn't look at a very important thing. Bench and depth. People didn't see this in the 2000 Mets either and they made it to the seires. Calling So taguchi a bench player is crazy and Adam Wainright? A backup closer? With the talent he can do he should be the yankees closer when mo retires! Also the Cards have a good rotation with Suppan and Carpentar. Their offense scores runs ecspecially with Pujols Edmonds Rolen And Eckstein. Personally i have no ida why everybody thought the CArds weren't good enough.

Chill out dude, they were bashing because we weren't the best this year. The Cards won a puny 83 games this year, definately not World Champion caliber. If we had won it in 2004 or 2005, there wouldn't be that much bashing because we were the best team those years.
But hey, we won, so I'm not complaining in the least bit. I'm just giving you a different perspective.

Actually, your statement is incorrect. They have not won the most games since 2000.
My favorite, the New York Yankees, have won 679 since 2000. That averages out to 97 wins a season, which is slightly more impressive than 94 a season. Especially when you consider that New York plays in a tougher division and league.
Cardinals deserved to win it this year. Heck, if they didn't, why'd they beat out the Mets who were "so great" and Detroit who were "on fire"? The Cards deserved to win it by beating them, but they didn't deserve to be in the playoffs with that garbage record AND almost blowing huge lead with half a month left to play.

Because Mother Nature was on their side. Granted, Tony LaRussa is a great manager and they have some pretty good players, but even the most loyal fans know deep down that the weather and the fact the Tigers had sooo much downtime, helped play a major role in their title run.

You should be grateful that Houston lost the last game of thier regular season. If The Astro's had won; it would have forced you to play that make-up game against SF. And where would you be if that had happened.
I have given The Cardinals thier due all through the play-offs.
The Cardinals won the world series fair and square.
Enjoy it instead of being a sore winner.
You're starting to sound like a whinny sux fan.

i replaced into 7 months previous the final time the Dodgers won the worldwide series. when you consider that I for sure do no longer remember that interest, i assume i've got in no way seen my group win a worldwide series. that's been 20 years and that i'm nevertheless waiting.

Baseball's a "what have you done for me lately" game. With only 83 wins, the Cards didn't seem like they had enough talent at the time. If they make the playoffs with only 83 wins next year, people won't expect them to win it all...again.
