Vincent Van Gogh's painting, Vase with Fourteen Sunflowers, is located in London's National Gallery. If the painting is placed in a wooden frame 12 centimeters (cm) wide on each side, what is the area of the actual frame in square centimeters?

The size of the painting is:
93.0 x 73.0 cm = 6789 cm^2

If you include a frame 12cm wide, then the total area becomes:

(93+12) x (73+12)
=8925 cm^2

So the area of only the frame = 8925 - 6789 = 2136 cm^2

I believe that you need more information here. Just knowing how wide the frame is won't get you its area...you need to know something about the linear dimensions as well.
