from the first day of your last period? So my last period was 6th November, that makes me 4weeks & 3days pregnant...BUT, I know that I ovulated on the 19th November, which actually makes me 2weeks 4days pregnant. So why do the health professionals insist on adding on these extra two weeks?

So when I went for a scan yesterday and was told that there's nothing on the screen, isn't that obviously because implantation only took place 2 weeks ago, so there won't be anything to see? But according to my dates, she had me down at over 4 weeks...I just don't get it.

Because the vast majority of women have no idea when they ovulated. So traditionally pregnancy is calculated from LMP (first day of last period). Hence when you conceive you are already two weeks by this system.

It's just a convention. What's important is that we all use the same convention, otherwise dates could be out by two weeks which could affect a baby being designated premature or postmature.

The only sure date is the day of your last period. A normal pregnancy lasting 40wks from that date NOT conception. Good Luck. My dates of my first pregnancy indicated I was pregnant the week before I got married! I was not but I found that hard to explain, Just enjoy! Luv J xx A scan at less than 8 weeks rarely shows anything, bu it is used to try and established how far your pregnancy is. A friend of mine, who is a large lady has just been told she is 8 months pregnant and has had a bleed every month through out!

People ovulate at different times it isn't always on the 14th day. For some it can be anywhere from the 12-16th day of cycle. It is easier to calculate pregnancy from first day of last period because you know that date for sure.
What do you mean there wasn't anything on the scan, are they saying there is no embryo? That you aren't prego? That it's a blighted ovum? Or are they saying it's still to early to see anything?

Pregnancy is calculated as a guide for medical professionals, research has show that by 2 weeks past your due date your placenta does not work as good and the placenta does not give your baby enough oxygen which can lead to compromised babies. The due date is based on a 28 day monthly cycle, if your monthly cycle is less than 28 days you will most likely have had your baby by your due date, and if your monthly cycle is more than 28 days then you will be more likely to go overdue.

They add on weeks because there is actual way to determine when you conceived. If you have sex on Monday, Tuesday you might not be pregnant but on Wednesday you can. That is only an example. It is up to the sperm and they can take there time swimming up the birth canal. They also live for awhile.
