Apparently there is a difference, but I have no idea what that is. A quick Google search didn't yield many results.

Here's my guess (and please note that this is only a guess).

Traditionally, lace is made by "tatting"...this is essentially crocheting, on a very minute level. People who can tat lace are highly skilled, and their work is often expensive, based on the fact that it takes a lot of time, and attention to detail.

Much of the modern lace that we see is made (a) with a machine, and (b) by cutting away the excess fabric.

Perhaps the term "real" really means "traditional" or "hand made", and "fake" means "machine made" or "laser cut".

actually i couldnt tell you that but it bothers me when someone tells someone that what they're wearing is fake...like a football jersey....it doesnt matter if the jersey is real or fake as long as youre supporting your favorite team than it shouldnt matter
