Your timing may be just right as people are sure to be upgrading or even getting new laptops for Christmas and selling off their old models.
A friend found a laptop on Craigslist for $250 (it's spare of sorts for her mother). True, it's a Celeron, but she knows computers and she really checked this one out before buying it. So, you might want to try Craigs list.

I bought an HP Omnibook 4160 for $75 on Ebay. Works great.
I had one before but the hard drive eventually crashed so instead of buying a new harddrive, I bought the whole laptop.

A $300.00 laptop? You won't find it even in your City's junkyard! And even if you do find it, you wouldn't be able to upgrade it to something decent.
Your best bet would be to go to the shopping sites of any of the big ones and try to get a refurbished one. But don't go to eBay!!!
Good luck
