Where did this come from. I know this may sound like a stupid question but where did the idea of Santa/Father Christmas come from. Was it just a story that was made up for children?

The original idea for it came from Saint Nicholas, who, at winter, would give deprived children presents. The story kind of mutated from there. The image we have of Santa Clause comes from coca cola (no joke) who designed his image of red suit and fluffy trim.

The historical figure behind Santa Claus is 'Sinterklaas' who is part of Dutch folklore. Children in the Netherlands receive presents on 6th December from Sinterklaas and kids in Germany call him 'Nikolaus'.

It was a dutch story brought to America. It was created for children to look forward to Christmas and have a symbol for it like a bunny for Easter of candles of Hannukah.

A guy called saint Nicholas...or saint nickclaus in his own country, thats where 'claus' came from. Not sure who he was though, I'm guessin a generous man who gave gifts to people.
