make a coordinate plane with the number of hours worked on the x axis and the earnings going along the y axis. the hours (x axis) going from 1 to 8, and the earnings going from 4.50 to 36. plot your first point at (0,0), since you worked 0 hours and earned $0 fo rthe first one. then plot the second point, (1, 4.50) because you worked 1 hour and earned $4.50.

A) Take a sheet of graph paper or make your own graph. Draw a heavy(bold) vertical line (Y-axis) and a heavy (bold) horizontal line (X-axis).

Now you need to decide on your scale. You can go 1:1 (by one hour increments on the vertical axis and 1 dollar increments on the horizontal axis (X). This will make a very wide graph so you might want to turn your paper sideways (landscape format)

Now plot each pair of points on the graph using the hours worked as your Y coordinate (vertical) and the dollars earned as your X coordinate (horizontal)

Draw a line through the points and your graph is finished.

B) the slope (m) is the change in Y over the change in X ...or

(Y2-Y1)
--------
(X2-X1)

so pick two points from either the graph or the list above and insert them into the above formula. If we use Hour 3 and 4 as our points we get

(18.00 - 13.50)
------------------
(4 -3)

which reduces to 4.5/1 or 4.5 which is your slope (m)

C) The Y-intercept is the point at which the line cross the y-axis, which in this case is (0,0) so the y-intercept is (0,0).

Draw two axis: on the bottom horizontal axis, place no. of hours worked and on the vertical axis, place earnings after tax.

Plot: for 0 hours, place a cross at $0, for 1 hour, place a cross at $4.50, etc.

Draw a line of best fit through as many points as you can. Line up a ruler on the points and see where you can get it to cross as close to as many as the points as possible.

Slope (or gradient): worked out like this... pick 2 points on your line. measure the vertical distance between the 2 points (in dollars) and measure the horizontal distance (in hours) so you get a right-angled triangle at the points. Divide the dollars by the hours. You should get your gradient.

Y-intercept is where it crosses the y-axis. You could read this straight off the graph, or do a bit of fiddling with the algebra of the equation to find y when x=0.

Hope that helps
