Smoking is getting banned everywhere. Is it:
a) Because smokers are killing themselves
b) Because smokers are hurting other people
c) Because smokers are an easy target
d) Because our president is a dip-sh*t
e) None of the above...the asker of this question is a dirty hobbit and a waste of skin...

I had thought it is because they are hurting others...with that logic, maybe we should do something to people that drive while talking on their cell phones, or people that drive too fast, or people that just smell bad, or people that cheat in relationships, or anyone else that does anything to hurt anyone...

Might I suggest a more effective solution? You can't impose the same punishment on people that drive on their cell phones and that is just unfair. Maybe we should cut everyone's nipples off?

Yes, yes...that is what we will do...we will cut the nipples off of anyone that does anything to hurt anyone...I will start today...

Actually, this is all because of an office debate...I never said if I smoked or not. It doesn't really matter either way. In San Diego, they have banned smoking at the beaches. Secondhand smoke, my a$$...

Yes, smoking is unhealthy for everyone...do you not agree that talking on a cell phone while driving is unhealthy...for everyone, yet it is not widely criticized. So, does that make things lop-sided and unfair? That is all I'm asking. Why smokers and not everyone. I'm sorry if you aren't quick ehough to catch my points. Try Ginko Biloba...

Smoke if you like -- it's your choice. BUT it's my choice NOT to smoke. WHAT gives you the right to smoke in public places and inherently damage MY health and the health of others?

The answer is A, B and the second part of E .... "the asker of this question is a dirty hobbit and a waste of skin..."

B. Because smokers are hurting other people

This is my personal opinion as to why it's good it's getting banned:

I don't mind smokers as long as they don't smoke around me. Not only because of the smoke damaging my lungs but I'm very allergic to cigarette smoke.

I don't hate them or anything but it's frustrating. There are more important things to be upset about. But I think it is rude when they smoke around others. I've had friends actually blow it into my face while talking to me. Someone smoking near me could make me sick, this happened to me all the time in school/work. Everyone would go out for a smoke break and come back and I wouldn't be able to stop sneezing or stop my eyes from watering (I also can get an itchy throat or other symptoms like the ones on the link). I have to take a shower to feel better because the chemicals in the smoke gets in my hair and touches my face. I can't always do that if I'm at school or work.

... And I actually do hate people who drive while talking on their cell phones (That is illegal in Chicago). So I don't understand your point, exactly. ... Cut nipples?

(Edit): Talking on your cell phone is widely criticized. People are just as addicted to their cell phones as they are to cigarettes, I mean if they would risk their life and someone else's life to talk to their spouse about what they want for dinner. A lot of people hate it and not only is it criticized but it is becoming illegal. I didn't understand your question because it doesn't make sense. You contrast banning cigarette smoking in public and using cell phones and driving too fast when driving, yet they aren't different, all of them should be illegal. Then you compare other things that have nothing to do with cigarette smoking. It was non sequitur. I wasn't trying to be facetious.

I think you mean Ginkgo biloba.

I don't think it matters in the states if smokers hurt themselves but here in the UK they cost the NHS a lot of money. Of course they also contribute a lot in tax so there is some balance. Recent research shows that secondary smoke that the bystanders inhale from the cigarette of the smoker is more dangerous than that which the smoker inhales so smokers can damage the health of non-smokers and that is surely not acceptable. Smoking also creates a mess which has to be cleared up and damages furniture and fabrics. In the UK there are laws against driving to fast as there are in the states and there are also laws about using a cell phone while driving the penalties for which have recently been increased

The government wants a cessation of smoking as smoke increases the anger portion of the brain much like the effects of alcohol, the anger leads to resistance of gov policy and being led by the officials, people on the other hand can hardly stand the effects of the smoke while eating,or trying to work, a short understanding can be achieved if you cut out all salt from your food and soon you will taste the salt naturally in the food and wonder why so much is added in food.it would be great if a happy medium could be achieved for both the non and the smoker.Concerning the first reason read 1984.

Smoking causes more deaths than all other drugs except alcohol. The hypocrisy of Government is highlighted when they ban other drugs but not the two biggest killers. The problem is that there is too much money involved and the tobacco companies don't care whether they kill people they only want to make money. People who smoke - and I used to smoke 100 a day - pay the price with their health and all the twaddle about freedom of choice is merely a slogan invented by the tobacco companies - rather like the rant that guns don't kill people, people do. With blatantly evil people around it is difficult to ban smoking altogether - but smoking does harm others and if you want to smoke there should be one condition - that you only expose yourself to it's perils. Smoking kills not only the smoker but others. Cancer is not a nice way to die. Most people don't think that they will get it or think about how painful it is to die from it until it is too late. Freedom demands that the freedoms of non-smokers are respected as much as those of smokers - there are two sides to the balance. Non-smokers have every right to demand that they are not exposed to deadly chemicals and the right of people to ingest the same does not give them the right to also kill or harm others.

Just because there are other things that are also unacceptable does not justify allowing smoking. With that 'logic' we should scrap all laws and let people be as selfish as they want, because they would merely be exercising their freedoms.

Interesting take on justice - but all the new law abiding citizens under your regime will require bottle feeding ...
As for down on smokers, they indulge in a habit that intrudes upon other people in a potentially harmful way.
Talking on a mobile while driving is illegal and if caught they face the weight of the law. Body odour - whilst intrusive is not really deadly and can be eliminated by moving out of nasal range - cheating is hurtful not deadly - so smoking is the only one that fits both criteria - it is intrusive AND it is potentially fatally harmful to others around the smoker, even at a distance. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

Well, aside from tobacco smoke being smelly, and cigarette butts everywhere ugly, I think it's mostly clever marketing and lobbying by anti-smoking groups. They basically made it "uncool" to smoke.

Their advertisements are well designed and have a lot of impact, and they exagerate the dangers of smoking, particularly second hand smoke, because they feel they are saving lives which they are.

Also smokers probably raise healthcare costs for everybody, and are an easy target.

How about people just driving cars? Period. Much more harmful to the environment and respiratory system. But nobody wants to go there. God forbid they should start legislation taking away people's driving privileges. Can you imagine the riots and carnage?

People are down on smokers because they don't like the smell of cigarette smoke. I can remember when I was little I used to love the smell of the inside of cars when people smoked in them. I also like the smell of campfires and driftwood burning.

I'd like to keep my useless nipples. Thank you.

It is because everyone wants to thwart my good time. Damnit. All I want to do is have this damn cigarette inside, but because of these damn fun police I now have to go outside. Here in Ohio, our statewide smoking ban kind of went into effect today. Although they don't have the rules and regulations set out yet, so I'm guessing it will take a little while longer before it is enforced. Also, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the President. AH **** it, I'm going out to smoke. Have a nice day.
