I have a file that I would like to keep people from editing at all costs. It is a very important file in a simple .txt format. Right now I can get it in read-only but if someone wanted to edit or delete it all they would have to do is go to properties and un-check "read-only." I need a solution ASAP.

thanks.

(p.s. I know that .txt probably isn't the best file choice but i dont really have a choice, seriously)

There is HOPE, this method i'm going to show is ONLY permanent readonly as long as the user who try to access it is not technologically advanced.

OK, if you have windows XP pro, goto My Computer click tools which is on up top go to folder options and go View" tab and go down and uncheck "use simple file sharing recommended" then press OK, and close my computer, then Find the file you want to make perment read only and right click it and go to Security and click advanced" on the bottin and on the first tab which is permissions Click to uncheck "inherit blah blah from parents" and click Copy and hit OK and then your back on the security menue again and click REMOVE, keep clicking until everything clears up completely and press OK, it will warn you something about making that file COMPLETELY UNACCESSIBLE and press OK and thats it Done,

the file is now permanently read only and will never change unless a smarter user knows what you did and counterdo it to access the file, remember if you want to access this file in the future you will need to open that security tab again and click add and click FInd and add both administrator and administrators
the second one have an S it, remember that and click ok and will add every thing and click all check box that says allow whatever and done, if you still cant access the file then click add again and add whatever name that is currently using the computer, you'll find that name in the start menu on top or at logg off or logon screen, or just email me to acess it again, if you have trouble

If saving in a .txt format is your only option then saving it to read only media is your only option.
