Well there is almost certainly life elsewhere in the Universe but because of the distances involved the chance of us having any meaningful contact are sadly rather slim. I would hope that discovering life would encourage human beings to concentrate on developing technologically and ethically as a whole species and letting go of the petty differences which people use as excuses to kill each other all over the world.
I suspect some people will say 'PREPARE FOR WAR' when we find out there are extra terrestrials but if they've survived the development of nuclear weapons and possibly more destructive weapons and not blown themselves to bits they'd have to be reasonably humane.
I think if we discovered life elsewhere it would bring people together, make them think how small our little world is and make us feel more a part of the universe.

Hello,
The answer to this will depend entirely on the kind or form of life we discover & possibly the circumstances under which it is discovered too.
So, If the life forms are simple, or basic such as lichens or mosses, or some other form of simple plant's then its obvious that humans will try and think how they can make use of them (as a resource!) for our own benefits i.e. exploit them. (think tree's & timber, etc).
But on the other hand, if the life forms are intelligent, especially if they are more advanced than we human's are right now. Then its not hard to predict that humans will feel incredibly threatened and will respond in a highly defensive way. We will crap!! ourselves collectively if you like.
**The discovery of intelligent life else where in the universe would be so profound, shatteringly BIG, the news of it would be quite literally stunning!! Most people just wouldnt believe it to begin with until they saw real proof or evidence for themselves. Such a discovery would be the biggest thing ever to have happened in the entire history of the human race, frankly its so profound as to be un-imaginable!! It would be BIGGER than the splitting of the atom or dropping of the first H bomb, bigger and more profound than God!!. (yes! in my opinion). Real solid proof we are not alone in the universe, how much more profound could it get?

Get excited for a while, then lose interest.
It's highly likely we'll hear them, or detect them some other way, a long time before we see them. To Joe Blogs, that won't really be all that interesting.
Hope it happens while I'm still alive though.

Two possibilities...
If we're stronger than them - Do what we did to the Native when we discover America, take their land & give them the crappy part until we discover gold then we move them to a crappier part
If they're stronger than us - Kiss their *** (or asses) depend on how many they have...

Breath a huge sigh of relief that we are not alone. For if we are alone it means that we are an anomaly created by chance and can be snuffed out at any given moment by chance. That's not a comfortable thought.

the right wing Christian zealots will ask them if they know and accept Jesus Christ as their lord and savior and then try to convert them if they worship an "alien" god
the second thing we will probably do is build a McDonald's near them and make their home some kind of amusement park and charge admission

Well, if history is anything to go by, we will first of all try to rip them off, then try to colonise and steal their land, then introduce them to various substances that will harm their health and destroy what little is left of their cultural heritage in preparation for brainwashing them with our cultural beliefs, then stereotype them as stupid, lazy and criminal, make them do all the crappy jobs, then when they finally get sick of it and fight back, label them dangerous terrorists and vow not to rest until they have been destroyed by our glorious boys in uniform.
