The most important character in my opinion is John Procotr

1. He struggles between the situations in the town and trying to patch up his relationship with his wife.

2. He is one of the few charcters who actually helps others who are accused or our in need of help.

I wrote an essay about John Proctor if you want to read it go ahead....i'll email it to you!

Abigail is by far the most important character, as a result of her actions and behavior, she gains the power to condemn everyone else in the book to death. The life of everyone else is in her hands. Without abigail, there would be no story in the first place. She started the whole hysteria, and carried it out throughout the story. Also, her evil was contagious, she put the idea into the heads of the other girls, thus further spreading the whole affair, somewhat like a virus, Abigail was the catalyst for the death of 19 people.

John Proctor
it his actions prior to the play that lead Abigail to act the way she does.
As well he goes through the most changes, you see him at a low point in his life, dealing with the aftemath of being unfaitful to his wife, then he falls further being accused of witchcraft, then falls further when accepting to lie abou tit to stay alive, but then he rises to a new moral high when he refuses to sign a confession, and accpets death reather then humiliation and betraying his freinds.
