This is a difficult question, but I would go with few friends because even if you have few of them, they are mostly your true friends. Not the ones who have many of them but yet, they aren't true friends at all.

you answered your own question, you dont need a whole bunch of friends anyway. you dont need to play the popularity contests. because all those who say "friend" really aint your friend. and you have to be careful who you label a friend too. dont try to shine for the whole world to see, shine to those who matter the most to you.

as with all things in life... quality before quantity!

I used to believe everyone was a friend. Now i have a more reserved attitude and reserve the friend labels for those who have proved worthy over the year, the rest are just acquaintances.

it depends on the quality of the friends. if most of them aren't good then its better to have more but if they're really great, then few is just the right amount.

I'll rather have ONE really good friend that I know I can rely on no matter what, good and bad than 5 friends. Now if you have 5 friends like the ONE friend then you are really lucky! :)
