It wasn't Washington and there were around 6 of them prior to George! They were called Presidents in Continental Congress, but led the country while George was fighting the British.

George Washington although I remeber hearing about some leader before him but obviously he couldn't have been president of The United States of America...right?

The first president of the united states under the constitution was George Washington. Since our government is entirely based on the constitution and not the articles of confederation those other presidents dont count. under the articles the president was more like the speaker of the house anyway, they didnt have executive power. it was not like the presidents that we know at all
