Is there more than one way? How can one prepare to be in the best position to be able to insure a spot on the team of our choice?

Work, work, work. There is no substitute. Basic physical fitness is a must as is mental fitness. Practice will develop the player skills you need to succeed at the college level. Unfortunately, a great player on a poor high school team sometimes gets overlooked by the college scouts. Your high school coach should be able to help you get noticed by college coaches and you need to pursue all opportunities. Of no invitations are offered, you can always try out for the college teams of your choice as a walk-on. It happens more frequently than you might think. Walk-on players earn full scholarships every year. Whatever else you do, don't ignore your academic development and do not give up on your dream to play college ball. Good luck.

First off, you have to be GOOD. If you haven't been selected to an all-league/all-state team in high school do not even bother trying out. Every school has open walk-on tryouts. Just contact the football office and they can provide you the information. Life as a walk-on is not easy, you are usually cannon fodder for the starters in practice and play on the scout teams that are used to run the week's opponent's offense and/or defense. If you are the proverbial "Late Bloomer" you could develope into a full time performer and even earn yourself a scholarship. It has happened before.

If you are not good enough to get a football scholarship you could try out for the team whenever they have tryouts. Until then train, train , train.
