I have had my Hp Media Center for over 4 years and have been hearing strange noises at times, my computer does not seem to respond as fast as it used to. I have already doubled my memory and I keep up on all my anti virus.

That was one of the signs. Try to back up first your files while you can access to your hard drive. Repair it with your Windows Xp installer. If It the same performance I advice that you should buy a new one and make your old one as a slave.

You will hear unusual NOISES from the hard drive! Scan it, dump the temporary Internet files etc. do a defrag.. Then back it up NOW! Get ready to get a new hard drive or computer.

if u have smart capabilities enable it through the bios.that can give u an early warning. F Y I i had a bluescreen problem sometime back with a message about unmountable boot volume. which i could only rectify with a clean install of o/s that was a failing hardrive.

One way in XP is to go to event viewer and look for disk errors and warnings. it gives you typically 6 months worth of warning before the fatel day.

Hard drives have a 4-5 year lifespan.. BACK UP ASAP. Do it while you still can. Besides you can get that new 250gb for 60 bucks ;)

Some drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.
