A friend of mine has to go be interviewed at the probation department before his felony trial date. He has never been in trouble before and it was a nonviolent offense. Does anyone know the purpose of these interviews and what kind of questions will be asked and what responses can help or hurt his case.

This is likely so that the probation department can prepare a pre-sentence investigation report. It's not done in my state, but it is in many. He will likely be asked a lot of questions about his work history, education, family, history of drug use, treatment, etc. This information is used to determine what action the court should take regarding him when he does go for a plea or a trial.
He should dress neatly and try to leave any bad attitude at home. He should also answer the questions truthfully, as they will likely check his record.

Having been to court with a relative, the only advice I can give is that the person in question be 100% true to themselves. Anything less and the courts will find them out and it's not worth it. If they think you are a liar then you will be treated as such, despite the "fairness of the law". I wish you and your friend the best of luck and hopefully a very Merry Christmas!

ok, greater beneficial than possibly you will pay attention greater than a number of "be polites", yet i'm in simple terms going to furnish you with a warning: don't be overly well mannered. mom and father can odor BS, and in case you pass in there "confident, ma'am-ing" and "no, sir-ing" up a hurricane, they are going to get suspicious. So, be advantageous, yet do no longer over do it. additionally, keep away from gentle matters like faith or politics. (that's exceptionally usual suggestion for first assembly anybody.)
