Hung may have been used to perpetuate historical American racist stereotypes of Chinese and Asians in general, and Hung may have not gained so much attention had he been of another race. It is possible that the American public's interest for him is entirely innocent and independent of his race, and that he should capitalize on his fame as much as he can. Could his unabashed innocence, honesty and work ethic may have promoted his popularity? There is a lack of positive portrayals of Asian males (particularly Asian-American males) in the U.S. media, and William Hung may serve as a focal point for minority groups.[1] [2] Additionally, Hung's career arose out of others making a mockery of him, and the media exploited him as a joke, rather than as a talented or inspirational figure.[3] Rumors circulated around the Internet in mid-2004 that Hung had died of a heroin overdose, while sharing a hotel room with a transvestite hooker. Started by a satirical article on Broken Newz written by Bill Doty and Joe the Peacock, the rumor spread far enough that a Singaporean newspaper, The Straits Times, printed an article confirming that he was not dead and would fulfill his tour schedule in that country. Rumors that international pop sensation William Hung died of a heroin overdose have swirled ever since July 13, 2004, when the fictional — I repeat, fictional — "news" story excerpted above was published on the satirical — I repeat, satirical — Website, BrokenNewz.com.
Angst over Hung's alleged demise reached such a fevered pitch in Asia that barely a week later the Straits Times saw fit to print a denial by the 21-year-old former engineering student's father, Henry Hung, in its July 21 edition.
Hung himself addressed the rumors in a San Francisco Chronicle article dated August 4: "They're not true," he said. "I'm healthy and energetic as ever."
