my husband likes to use hot/warm water for washing and warm water to rinse. I am worried that will waste too much energy. He said it will clean better that way. I do not believe it.

hot or warm water is usually preferred over cold to get tough stains out. however, the warmer the temperature, the more likely it is to wear out your fabric or make the colors fade. this is why cold water is used for dark colors; warm water is used for lighter colors; and hot water is used for whites.

Hot water for whites, warm water for lighter colors, and cold water for dark colors that can bleed or things that can shrink. For my kids clothes, I most always wash in warm water. It does get them cleaner. So, he's right about that. Unless I get a cold water detergent, I don't use it much. And if your husband wants to wash in warm or hot water, who cares. He's paying the bills. I can think of a whole lot of bigger issues to argue about, water temperature being one of the least. It's not that big of deal, really.

I use hot water for towels, washcloths, and dishcloths. I use warm water for sheets and really dirty clothing. I use cold water for delicates, and handwashables. I use a cold water rinse for everything since studies have shown that it will waste energy and they are already clean. Using warm/hot water also deteriorates the fabric faster.

The machine takes in water and will warm it to the required temperature depending on your stat or program setting.

Then it comes down to whether it is cheaper to use your peak/off peak electric or gas to heat your water before it is taken by your machine. I never use more than 40 C, as this is the green thing to do. Only bedding requires high temps above 60C for hygiene reasons. The bio nasties are killed at this temp.

I don't know about how much energy it uses but my mom and I both use cold/cold for all laundry. Hot/warm or warm/warm will shrink clothes and fade them faster.
