my new house has just had a new septic field put in. The health dept. suggest getting my tank pumped out every two years. The septic tank company suggest every 18 months. When I weigh out the cost of replacing the field, I want to go with every year. It an old house. We have a family of 4. The tank is only 750 gallones. PLUS, it only cost me $137.00 to get it pumped out. SO, again, my question is, Is there any harm in getting it pumped too often?

Pumping out too often can also increase the possibility of damage to the tank. All it takes is an overzealous pumper sticking the pipe in a bit too hard, and you've got a broken baffle -- a $750 fix around here. We have our tank pumped every 2-3 years and it's never been full at any pump out.

Also, if you empty the tank completely, the pressure of the surrounding earth on the empty tank can collapse it.

Actually yes, as long as you aren't having problems don't have it pumped. A septic tank is alot like an aquarium. Believe it or not all your waste works together to create a balance of bacteria that helps break down the solid waste. Pumping to often can upset the balance.A little ridx once in awhile really helps.I grew up using septic tanks and have one now with four bedrooms.I have mine pumped about every six years and have never had a problem for 30 years.

In your case, pumping the tank once a year is a little bit too often. It won't hurt, but the 18 months recommended by the septic tank company is more realistic. As I'm sure you've already been told, it's also important to flush down some product like "Rid-X" once a month too, to maintain a good bacterial field at the tank.
You can get some good info at the below link, as well.

No, the grey water does not hurt the septic tank. It may kill the bacteria in the septic tank that breaks down the waste, so you may have to have it pumped more often. You can counter this effect by adding any of the septic system enzymes available to replenish the bacteria. As far as diverting the flow, you'll have to check with your state to see if this is allowed.

No, there is not harm to the tank in pumping it out when you want. however, if the septic tank is working properly every 18 to 24 months should be frequently enough. Between pumping's it is important to add septic tank bactria on a regular basis. It is available at your local hardware store. check out the variety of brands and follow the directions on the package.
Remember, laundry bleach eg, Javex will kill of the bactria in any septic tank.

18 months to 2 years should be sufficient. Pumping too frequently runs the risk of not letting the bacteria that "digests" the waste establish itself.
