Lets say i'm slowing down or comming to a stop, is it better to allow the rpm to drop below 2,000 before i put it into neutral? My friend said that it keeps the manual transmission's teeth from ruining.

Always keep it in gear until you come to a stop. You have more control of the vehicle. Just depress the clutch until you come to a stop. If the light turns green before you come to a stop, you are still in gear and have less chance of choking it off.

Many good suggestions are presented here. I think you can rest assured that it really does not matter how you do your coming to a halt regimen. Although not particularly well known, the gears in synchomesh manual transmissions (the US standard for 40 years - except reverse sometimes) are permanently enmeshed with each other. "Shifting gears" actually means you lock and unlock these individual gear sets which ride on the shaft(s) inside the transmission, not sliding one gear's teeth into another's. So, it is unlikely you can ruin the transmission's teeth by your deceleration method.

you should downshift as your stopping. Then once you get to a speed where you're in first or second (on some cars you have to stop to shift to first) you can either put it in neutral or leave the clutch completely depressed. This will also help save the brakes on the car and will not hurt the clutch if done properly. Plus if you need to accelerate for any reason you're already in gear and prepared to do so.

you could just leave it in gear but make sure you depress the clutch compleatley. that way when you are ready to take offf you dont have to shift gears again

i always downshift and allow the engine and transmission to do most of my braking. it doesn't hurt either on of them and saves your brake pads huge amounts of wear and tear. engine braking can really extend the life of your brake pads.
