mmd: you've got it right...capital punishment is barbaric and unnecessary. We do not have the right to decide life and death for ANYONE, including someone guilty of murder. Doesn't anyone see the hypocrisy in killing someone to demonstrate that it's wrong to kill someone? Duh.

Where you and I probably differ is that I believe the same about abortion. Abortion is murder. If you want to be consistent and live on principles, there is no other way to see it. If there's nothing wrong with abortion, as the abortion industry would like us to believe, then why don't we have the equivalent of "Dr. 90210" on tv, but instead of cosmetic surgery, make it about abortion stories? It could be called "Dr. Vacuum" or maybe "Choice in the Hood" and it could follow the stories of the poor women considering abortion, filming the final deed for all of the curious to see. Riveting television, no? I wonder if I should pitch this to NBC...I think that we would see, just as we do in capital punishment, that poor and minority babies are more likely to have their lives snuffed out by abortion than any other group.

How long do you think it would be before hoardes of people would pour into the streets demanding an end to the Holocaust that has claimed a minimum of 40 million innocent defenseless lives? Not long.

I have no problems with the moral implications of capital punishment; my problem is the way it is disproportionately applied in this country.

Rich people don't fry; poor people do.

If we are going to do it, we shouldn't hide it. It should be very public. If it's "right" the public should see the will of the governement being carried out. If it isn't "right" it is cowardice tio hide it.

I have a feeling we'd outlaw the practice in a hurry if every execution were televised on every channel.

It's great. It saves the state a lot of money in that they don't have to pay to let some muderer rot in jail for the rest of their lives. All you have to do to avoid it is not kill anyone, there's no downside.

I am in favor of it. Some crimes are so heinous, the criminal deserves the ultimate punishment.

I am for it. It is terrifying, and a deterrent.

So long as it is state-sponsored and sentenced under strict rules, I have no problem with it.
