Why shouldn't citizens be forced to contribute to society? I think young adults are too selfish. They could delay college for a year or two and volunteer in a hospital or some such service (including the military). This would decrease their level of apathy and increase their sense of community.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO... volunteer work is only meaniingful if it is done volunterily, if you force them too, they will be lazy and not work very hard, and they won't care about what they are doing. That is why its called volunteer work, if oyu force them too then its not volunteer work, its just work with no pay
