Our daughter is 10 months old and we've been signing to her since 6 months. The first 2 months were mainly practice for us. We only do a handful of signs; milk, all done, eat, and juice. She understands all of them to the point that she'll smile when we say what she wants and shake her head if we have it wrong. But she won't do them herself. She's been clapping her hands and doing other hand movements for about a month and a half now. Will she ever start doing sign? I've heard that some babies just won't use them. Is there anything we can do to encourage her?

My son started signing at about 9 months...we had been signing since 6 months also. HOWEVER, my cousin's son didn't start signing back until he was about 13 months old.

My son also started talking around 10 months and had an extensive vocabulary by 18 months and my cousin's son still barely talks at 21 months old. I think every child is just different and will go at their own pace.

Just be consistent and encourage her to do it back by waiting a minute to give her what she wants...for example: If she wants milk, sign milk and show her the cup but wait a minute and do the sign again a couple times before you give it to her. Eventually she will sign back if you stay consistent. Good luck and congratulations on making a great choice to be so involved with your daughter :)

We signed with my daughter who is now 8 yrs old and we started at 6 months and about 10 months she slowly started signing a few signs but when she was 12 months old she was signing over 170 signs even in sentences. Don't give up she is learning even though she doesn't sign back doesn't mean she doesn't know what you are saying. Keep it up it is well worth it. We are foster parents of drug babies and we have taught over 14 children to sign and it is amazing. Some don't talk until 22 months but they can sign! Good luck and don't give up.

My daughter didn't start using signs until about 12 months or so. Just keep using the signs and give it time. You might also try teaching her more signs- my daughter was really into animal signs and other things. Right now all the signs you're teaching her you could guess but if she knew more signs you'd be less likely to be able to guess so she might be more likely to use them.

Not sure what more you can do to encourage her except keep on teaching her, but my niece was shown at 6 months as well and finally started to use them a little over a year old. Just keep on doing it, and you'll be surprised the first time she uses them ! !

My son was able to say all those words plus few other words by the time he is 10 months old.
He was able to communicate he wants and needs without signing, I encouraged talking by talking to him all the time even about silly stuff.

You don't say if spending as much time on working on helping her pronounce her words as signing them.

Regardless of language, most children will use their first words (usually, the word for mother or father) and that applies to sign language, too, with the limitations of manual dexterity.

When she begins calculus at age 3, don't become too upset if she forgets a few formulas. That is quite normal.
