It depends on the fish, the size of the enclosure, and the amount of hiding spots / sight blockers.
In a large enough tank with enough territory area and lots of plants, two males would rarely kill each other. They would flare up, take a couple shots at each other, and one would back down and retire to his own territory. I wouldn't recommend it, but bettas can be kept together in one tank that is at least 60 gallons.

Bettas aren't stupid. They don't WANT to fight to the death. However, their instinct is to fight till one or the other backs down, which they cannot do in a smaller tank.

It may take a long time if they have hiding places or it just may depend on the tank.

I've owned Betta fish on and off over the years. I have seen them take each other down in about 1 hour to 1 week. The tank size and hiding spots in the tank play a major factor.

if you keep them in a larger aquarium you would have to worry about it so much
