Before some of you give knee-jerk, reflexive answers like, "more people are hurt trying to use a firearm to defend themselves", please visit - www.nraila.org. Use the search window to look up, "The Armed Citizen", and read about real life news stories about people using firearms to defend themselves.
Then ask yourself, why do some Senators & Congresspeople want to take away the 2nd Amendment right to keep & bear arms, much less allow a person the right to self-defense.

For "chicken" below, go to the website I provided for some serious facts, not unconfirmable statements by people like Charles Schumer, Handgun Control, the Brady Foundation, et al.
That's so cliche what "chicken" said, people will repeat it without ever checking for themselves the veracity of comments like those.

"Heidi", why don't you post a link where you got that misinformation about "people being shot in their own homes"? Chances are, you either heard it from someone like Michael Moorer, or an entity like Handgun Control, Inc, both of which are famous for dishing out misinformation and distorting the truth.

Yes. Can I give a knee-jerk response like this? An armed populace is a secure populace. I can't imagine losing the right to self-defense. Isn't the preservation of one's own life against anyone trying to take it unjustly the ultimate right?

The original point of the 2nd ammendment was to ensure that the people could form their own militia if the government got too controlling,to keep Democracy functioning, and so that small armed groups could defend their communities if the need arose(as in the Civil War). Being that the government has become a super power, and Democracy has turned into. . well, something else, the 2nd ammendment is simply there for home and personal protection at this point. Do we have the right? Of course we do.More intelligent people should exercise the right.

Obama is doing the political tactic of finding a movement and getting in front of it and then you are in the leadership position. The recent killings in multiple locations have shocked and offended many people, myself included. We can all look at the loss and know it is bad and wrong. These children were too young to make adult choices but they suffered from the decisions the adults made. We need to find a way to better protect the innocent while allowing for responsible gun ownership. FYI, I have been a gun owner myself but I don't currently have any guns. In high school one student goofing off wanted to scare his friend with a click but the .22 was loaded and he killed his friend. Alcohol is part of the tragedy here. Another guy I knew had a party and everyone went to his bedroom to see his pistol. Somehow the gun fell on the ground and fired or at least that is the story at the point I heard it. The bullet killed a woman at the party. These are things people don't want to see happen in the large numbers we have in the statistics in America. Gun deaths are off the charts in comparison to other countries. I think there is a reasonable case for limiting assault weapons and large clips. I can sense you will find this is a slippery slope and the end point is all guns being taken. I can find that a risk as well. What I hope we are heading for is a balance between the safety of innocent people and the right for people to enforce their own security with responsible gun ownership. To get there we need to keep the crazy people from having guns. Guns that are in storage should have a trigger lock and or be locked in a gun safe. This will keep them from being acquired as easily by a crazy person from a responsible person. But the issue is how do we define crazy? Maybe I see you are crazy or you would see me as crazy. Who gets to determine craziness and what is just eccentric and what is more on the violent end of crazy? But we live in America so we have all of us pushing and pulling towards our view of what should be done. This messy process is a basis of what makes America strong. We also make mistakes along the way and the ability to re-choose our way out of bad choices is again part of the American way. I don't have the final answer but I do think we need to make some adjustments. The current situation has inflamed people and I see a political will that will put the NRA on the defensive.

I believe in the right, and I believe in the responsibility. if you own a gun, you better know where it is at all times. if your child gets ahold of it and uses it, you should be charged with negligent homicide. I believe people have the right to be shot in their own home, with their own gun.

EDIT: Apparently believing in the right is not good enough for you...you want people to believe everything your self interested link has to say, and not believe everything else. Check it out...THEY AREN'T GOING TO GIVE YOU THE BAD STATISTICS! No ammount of trying to insult me via email is going to stop that. DId you know that Cheney shot an 80 year old guy in the face? DIdn't check the link, but I bet it isn't there. BTW, I am for the second amendment. And the first.

I'm a Southerner.. and as such I was raised with guns, and hunting.. and I have no problem responsibly having firearms in my home. The problem isn't people like myself.. it is the minority of morons out there that should be given Darwin Awards (for those of you that don't know, that's an award for taking yourself out of the gene pool in some absurd fashion). Should we take away our rights because of a few idiots? I'd say no.. now the big kicker.. if it's not OK to take away the right to bare arms here because of a few idiots.. then is it OK to take away other rights because of a few idiots? all rights are equal, and we as a people should be striving to make ourselves more free.. not limit ourselves in the name of security.

I believe it doesn't matter what I believe on the subject because it is our constitutional right to own a weapon. With that said, I do believe in restrictions and time limits to purchase weapons.

Restrictions in the sense that since you lose your civil rights when you commit a felony, you should lose that right to bear arms. And time limits in the sense of a 30 day waiting period before buying a handgun.

If you want to see what happens with the government starts taking away peoples guns, look at Australia.

Crime has gone up down under since they implemented strict gun laws in the 1990s.

Yes I believe in the right to bear arms and no one is going to take that right away. And no I do not own a gun and never will, but that is my right also.

Those you commit crimes hate an honest person with a gun, they scare some politicians to death, wonder why.
