Here's the scoop: I, myself, don't particularly like prepaid mobile phones because I talk a lot and like the added features that a contract (though not flexibility) affords. However, I bought my twelve year old cousin a Boost Mobile i415 for Christmas. Then, there are two 5-year old boys, a 6-year old boy, a 9-year old girl, and two 18-year olds that now asking their favorite relative for a phone.

Do you think the 5, 6, and 9-yr. olds are too young for a mobile phone? In regards to the 18-year olds, should I buy them Boost Mobile, CingularGO, or Alltel? Please help. The only reason I bought the 12-yr. old a Boost because he asked. The 18-yr. olds don't care as long as they can use it.

Thank you in advance as I greatly appreciate your help.

happy2luvk9s -- With all due respect, the 12-year old lost both his parents at six years old and he is under the legal guardianship of his aunt (who's my aunt as well). My cousin asked me if I can buy him the phone so he can keep in touch with our aunt because he has a lot of after-school activities. My aunt could not afford to buy him one so I asked for her permission and she gave me her consent after explaining to him the phone is only to be used calling her, her children, or me. No one else. As for the younger kids, they asked me for the PREPAID mobile because they want to keep in touch with their parents and again the parents cannot afford the phones but they agreed on it. I only asked because I thought it was of poor taste to buy anyone under 12 a mobile phone like you have so readily expressed. The 18-year olds are my brother and his girlfriend so I wanted to do something nice for them because we're so close. By the way, ma'am, I am close to their ages.

there are cell phones out there made for young kids like that where you can add what numbers they can call and only those ones. I think they are ok for kids because you decide who they can call. also make sure the parents can afford cards to put time on the phones. I would just be afraid of them loosing them. i would say for a 9 year old its ok...but not 5 and 6. they arent responsible enough and they shouldnt be anywhere that they couldnt contact their parents anyways. as for what kind for 18 year olds...wherever you get the best deal.

Ok, well, my take is if this is your kids then maybe u should get a family plan. Verizon has that Migo thing where they can only call 4 people and 911. The 9 year old could use it. The 5 & 6 year old since they are so close in age should get one to share. I would go with CingularGO phones. At least then you'd have rollover minutes.

The 5 and 6 yr olds, definately, the 9 yr old maybe- does he or she do after school activities? Maybe the people you should be addressing this too is their parents, who may not approve of any of them- even the 12 yo, having cell phones. Even prepaid phones can be a distraction.

No cell phones for kids younger than middle school--especially not prepaid because those numbers circulate a lot and you never know who might call the number looking for the former holder of the account. We tried our 13 year-old on a prepaid phone for a year before adding her to our plan (she's disabled so we wanted her to carry one for emergencies). She got more calls from people who insisted that they had called some friend of theirs than from anyone else. She didn't usually answer it unless it was a number she knew anyway though.

Parents should be consulted before giving a phone to a kid who isn't in the late teens -- it's a courtesy. It sounds like the 12 year-old was on the "ok" to get one anyway but the younger kids shouldn't get them from you.

5 and 6 seem too young to have phones except for emergenices maybe. They should at least be 7 and 8. 5-6 is still in kindergarten. Let them enjoy their child years!

Yes, you can do that, but if you stick your sim card into another phone, that phone will still be under your parent's plan. If you want a phone that isn't under your parents, you'll have to buy a new phone under a new plan.
