It's not only used for travellers/tourists. The term can also refer to people who don't have a place of their own to live in and crash on friends' sofas and get moved on from one to another.

Definition:
"1. A cheap form of lodging used mainly by college-students or recent college-grads, where one stays on acquaintance's couches rather than a hotel.

2. What someone who can't afford rent on their own and/or can't find roommates quick enough does when they are "between" places"

Yes, a friend of mine (my house mate) is a regular couch-surfer, he has been to Switzerland, Italy, France and even the USA.
The people he visited were all really nice and showed him round the city etc.
A fellow couch-surfer from Canada has stayed in our house last summer. It's a cool way to meet new people and see places that you normally wouldn't see.
Try it!!
