Seeing that the average American lived to be 62 back when it was set up and the age to retire was 65, it should be adjusted to fit the times of today. If the average American lives to be 74, then the retirement age should now be 77. Raise the retirement age and also raise the tax to be comparable to that of school teachers. I know they have a good retirement because they pay a lot higher tax than those who are going to rely on social security. A lot of people will cry but that will be the only way to save it. I am a retired person.

Don't fix it... let it die
Decide on a cut off age and require people to pay the tax until the money sufficient for people that can retire from that age is there... then cut the tax
It is a free country with free public education and if you are not smart enough to figure out how to take care of yourself then that is to bad for you....welcome to the free world.... otherwise lets stop calling ourselves a democratic republic and just become socialist.... the way we are going now we will be there soon anyway

Social security was not meant to be a long term program, we have just assumed as much and used it as such. We have become, as Americans, dependent upon this program when we should not be. I am not sure what can be done to fix it since the eldery population is climbing and people are living longer.

Allowing people to take say 2% of their tax and let them invest in in any way they want. If a person doen't save tht money, then that is their own fault. For those who do not beilve in privatizing a small part of Social Security then let ask you this question: Who do you trust with your money, Yourself or the Government?

I really liked Clinton's plan with the surplus, but it is now too late for that. I think Al Gore's plan to raise the threshold might be the best plan. That is the only one that basically keeps SS the way it is now, and can still make it solvent. I don't like Bush's privatization plan though.

I think welfare should be cut and that money should be put into ss.If people cant work and take care of themselves why should the rest of the country be burdened with it. Especially illegal aliens, I have been reading alot about that problem latley and its scarry. If your interested theres a website projectusa.org that has info.
