Can thoroughly recommend the Which? Book of Wiring and Lighting.
Very well written, very clearly illustrated, very easy to follow.
The ISBN is 0852028172. See http://www.amazon.co.uk/Which-Book-Wiring-Lighting/dp/0852028172
I think it is now out of print but it would be well worth phoning your local library and asking if any of the libraries in the county have a copy.

The best book I ever came across was the Readers Digest complete DIY manual which gives you all the details and example photos of wiring a complete house and also on small electrical tasks.

Electricity . . . the best thing to understand is that there is enough power (amps) in 1 ckt to kill 20 people or kill you 20X . . .
Then understand the importance of having a qualified journeyman do your work.
If you do not understand death, how about $$ ? It cost the former owner of this house lots of $$ to correct his amateur work and bring it to code before selling it.
Electricity, there is a reason it takes 4 years to get certified . . .

i am going to contradict another solutions right here... Your handyman is incorrect about with the ability to somewhat upload a grounded receptacle (yet an additional reason 'handymen' might want to not be touching electric powered artwork). Please employ a approved electrician for electric powered artwork. The metal jacket on previous BX cable isn't approved as a grounding skill. it is elementary interior the nationwide electric powered Code as style AC (armored cable) cord. The previous BX version of this does not meet the specs suggested as for with techniques from modern codes. hence its metal jacket can not be used as a grounding skill. because you do not have a grounding skill on the receptacle, the in elementary words Code-approved replacements are both a non-grounding receptacle (2-prongs), or a GFI receptacle it truly is marked as "No kit floor" on the cover plate. regrettably, neither is probably to remedy your particular situation. The surge protectors frequently might want to be grounded to finish their pastime or maybe setting up the GFI gained't grant you with one. i'm afraid that your in elementary words good answer is to have a approved electrician run a sparkling cord and installation a sparkling receptacle for you. replace: Sorry Fred, i am going to't positioned my code e book away. I make component to my residing fixing the artwork of handymen who concept they knew what they were doing. it is the 2d time, presently, that I have considered you giving out undesirable electric powered suggestion that you're of route not qualified to grant. Please stop previously someone receives damage out of your suggestion. I favor i ought to provide your replace yet another thumbs down.
