If your machine does everything else but then stops when it comes to spin, its brushes. That's when the motor is under most load, and because the brushes are worn it just hasn't got the umph in it to spin a load of heavy wet washing. Its an easy fix, brushes are around £20,unscrew 2 screws holding top, slide top back and lift of,look at motor, brushes are where there are 2 spade connectors, you need to pull these of and then slide brushes out, replace in reverse order.Be carefull when putting new brushes in as they can break easy.Make sure machine is unplugged from the socket!

It may be the fan belt is broken or some small electrical fault.
If it is an old washing machine you might consider treating yourself to a new one.
Usually the lifespan on these appliances is about 5 years with exceptions.
If it is still in very good condition you could ask the hotpoint agent for a quotation on the repairs and that way you could decide to keep or buy a new model

You don't give me much to go on, but...
You'll notice that the machine didn't spin when the lid was open. There is a little switch that senses that the lid is down that goes bad on many machines. If you can get to that switch (usually by lifting up the top of the machine) you can test this by running a jumper to bypass the switch. IF this works, then you can either make the jumper permanent (not if you have kids or cats or..!!) or spend the $15 to get a new switch.
If that doesn't work, or if you hear other noises, or if it sounds like it's trying to spin and it isn't, then you've got other problems.

Don't scrap it before you have checked the belt. I had this problem. I pulled the machine out and took the back off and sure enough there it was. You can buy a new one much cheaper than a new machine. After all it's already an expensive time of year you don't need to add to it.

If the machine is doing its wash cycle the belts and brushes can't be gone doh!
The motor has several speeds obtained by different windings. The best guess for this problem is the motor or the timer mechanism. The timer is expensive and the motor is not too bad. If the machine is more than 5/7 years old I would buy another one.

I can Guarantee that the brushes have gone on the washer, Hotpoint notorious for them going, you can easily buy new ones and fit them yourself if you where you are looking, otherwise it will cost you about £40 - £50 to get them replaced. Would be good to let me know if I am right. I am 99% certain that this will be the problem...

Probably only the carbon brushes in the motor that need changing. This is a 10 minute job & only requires a screw driver. Well worth it if the machine is otherwise in good order.

neither do i, try the lint thing, it's normally at the bottom of the machine, if its full then the machine won't work, also if the pipe is blocked that would stop it from spinning, check to see if it's turned on and stuff short of that i can't help you, go window shopping while you think. also try draining it, some machines have a drain thing.

i garantee that it is probably your drain pump or a blockage in the filter both of these causes will stop the machine spinning i am speaking as a washing machine engineer of 10 years and i also own my own company.
