It's no different for politicians than for anyone else: it's justified if it's for the greater good and will not cause harm. To say lying is never justified is ridiculous--it's easy to mock the government for, say, not telling the public about anonymous wiretapping, but especially given the fact that it contains no identifiable personal information without further inquiry, would it really be effective if they told everyone?

When the lives of America's soldiers are at stake. I for one don't trust other countries 100% and since our News (especially CNN) can be seen around the world, our politicians have to lie. I also don't we as a country deserve to know the whole truth, especially in regards to war. I feel it jeopardizes the lives of our soldiers.

Yes it is.Hypothetical example,Bin Laden is surrounded by a crew of special forces sent their by by the president, the environment, the government of that country is not pro US.
In that situation if Bush is asked at a press conference, any news on Osama, the only honorable and even sane thing to do is lie.
This is just one example of the top of my head but there are many more situations were a politician has to lie.

It isn't justified. It shows a lack of trust in his people (which, in reality, is probably well founded). There should be nothing about which the government should have to lie where its people are concerned. We have the right to know what they are doing and why.
On the other hand, the government is authorized by the people, and only the people can remove it. So if the government lies repeatedly and gets away with it, it is the responsiblity of the people to replace the liars in office. So technically, politicians can lie all they want if they have no fear of remand.

Depends... if it is about your personal life and has nothing to do with how you are doing your job I think so, or if it is for our safety... but if you are lying to the American people about your job and what you are doing.. then I don't think it is...
Everyone has personal lives and as long as it doesn't affect your job I don't think the world needs to know- and there are security issues that everyone doesn't need to know.. but if you are holding back information for an election.. then I do not think it is justified

when your true plans will be compromised by releasing them. yea, its a must. In todays politics in general if you dont tell falsities you will not get elected. the other person will be doing it and if you dont you will be vilified. Its like the steroid scandal in baseball if you dont keep up with the Jones you will be left to the dogs. Its a sad day but its the way things are.

Well it depends on the definition of lie.

If lie also includes not telling everything you know about a subject or a deal in the works, they they have to lie sometimes while they are making deals or working out details.

If lie means to actually tell a falsity, then never.

Only when talking to Democrats because they would take the lie and twist it around. When the biased news stations reported it, it would actually be the truth for a change!
