Here is what I got off the net:
The Type A personality, also known as the Type A Behavior Pattern, is a set of characteristics that includes being impatient, excessively time-conscious, insecure about one's status, highly competitive, aggressive, hostile, and incapable of relaxation.[1] Type A individuals are often highly achieving workaholics who multi-task, drive themselves with deadlines, and are unhappy about the smallest of delays. The Type B personality, in contrast, is patient, relaxed, and easy-going.
According to Friedman (1996), Type A behavior is expressed in three major symptoms, one covert and hidden, as well as two additional factors that are more overt and observable:
An intrinsic insecurity or insufficient level of self-esteem, which is considered to be the root cause of the syndrome. This is believed to be covert and therefore less observable.
Time urgency and impatience, which causes irritation and exasperation.
Free floating hostility, which can be triggered even over little incidents.[2]

The different types are type A, the strict and rigid, perfectionistic type and type B, the relaxed individual’s personality type. The type A personality is a very flat personality, very strict. The Type A personality, also known as the Type A Behavior Pattern, is a set of characteristics that includes being impatient, excessively time-conscious, insecure about one's status, highly competitive, aggressive, hostile, and incapable of relaxation. Type A individuals are often highly achieving workaholics who multi-task, drive themselves with deadlines, and are unhappy about the smallest of delays. The Type B personality, in contrast, is patient, relaxed, and easy-going. There is also a Type AB mixed profile for people who cannot be clearly categorized.
As you can see all the role models of Corporate America are type A. We live in a society which is deeply paranoiac... Fortunately there is also a type AB to avoid the necessity to put a lot of us in a mental asylum...

an expression transferred from the study of wolves; the alpha female and the alpha male in the pack are dominant and therefore enjoy benefits before the pack and benefits the pack is not necessarily entitled to (such as mating)
the expression was transferred by pop-psychologists looking at the phenomena of the modern workplace, in particular the office
a lot of alpha bitc*es out there, and alpha d88cks, too; (notice how there's no equivalent for alpha b88tch?)
