My bench grinder and the table it's mounted on vibrate almost violently at times. It's obvious the grinding wheels are out of balance. How can I balance the 6" wheels and stop the vibration? Thanks.

Get a diamond wheel dresser from your local engineering supply store. It's an industrial diamond, set in a steel holder, and is used to true up grinding wheels. Don't use it on the sides of the wheel, though - if the wheel is not running true on its axis, get a new wheel, and make sure it is specified for the speed (RPM) of your motor.

good advice so far, if it is really bad you probably need to replace both wheels, try dressing them first though, you'ld be surprised how little difference in the wheels can make them off balance. Most hardware stores should have a dressing wheel or may know where you can find one. Another trick AFTER you correct the wheels is to mount your grinder on a piece of rubber, an old truck mud flap or something similar, that way when you are grinding you will not get normal vibrations telegraphed through to your bench.

One problem that may be compounding the other issues would be the mounting. Heavy rubber grommets can isolate the dynamic vibrations and help smooth out the shake. I used some grommets from car shock absorbers, but anything that fits your set-up may do the trick. Automotive types would be less resistant to excessive wear; find 'em at a repair shop in the junk bin. FYI: for safety, make sure to 'ring test' the wheels if you haven't done so. Suspend a wheel from a wire/string, and tap it with a mallet/hammer/screw driver handle. Good wheels should ring crisp like a bell; cracked ones make a dull, thud sound.

I would strongly suggest you replace the wheels, or the whole unit. The wheels can fly apart and do harm. Home improvement stores have the same grinders for about $60. I've seen them in the pawnshops for $20

I've never heard of someone balancing grinding wheels I think you just need to replace them.

Either dress the wheels or replace them. Also, I have mine mounted to its own pedestal.
