I will never forget, even though I was born years later. My dad was a country schoolteacher, the oldest son, helping support his parents and four younger brothers and sisters when he was drafted. He told me he got on a troop ship in New Orleans and didn't know where he was going until they got into the South Pacific. He was in New Guinea and fought at Guadalcanal. After the second time he was wounded, he became a DI. The docs told him he'd never walk again, but he never told family or friends about that until 40 years later. He had a satisfying career and retired at 70 because of heart disease. Today I heard people on talk radio saying the kids today don't understand patriotism and honor and that they're spoiled, but I don't think they give the young people credit. My 21-year-old son is a Marine and Iraq vet. We were talking about WWII one day, and I wondered if the U.S. could gear up for a war effort the way we did in the 1940s. My son said, "Yes, we can!"

I wasn't alive then but I know today is the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, I listen to talk radio most of the time, today they were talking about it. Sad that happened. We were a mighty country and power full then.

Yes. I reflected on the significance of the day. I watched a couple of special programs on the History Channel. And I told this joke, which is my annual ritual (even though the joke is outdated because the star of the joke is now deceased)--nevertheless, it's a cute joke:
Didja hear about the Japanese *****? Every December 7th he attacks Pearl Bailey.

Actually I did....I did not do anything special but it is very hard not to forget "a day that will live in infamy" as then President Roosevelt termed it...I was a history minor and had family members who were involved directly in fighting in WW2

I lit a candle before I came to work. I woke up thinking about it & it has been a rather somber day for me as I've been reflecting on history.
