Yeah, I think it's safe to say that "families" reach out to businesses, legit & otherwise, in every major city. Why not? And every culture has its own forms of organized crime, so it's not always the ones w/ a vowel @ the end.

Yes they are alive and well all over the usa, worldwide maybe not. It will be very very interesting to see what happens in the next 10 years as the Salvadoran Mafia MS13 has spread out like a sunami all over this country and the two forces will eventually have to face off.

Oh yes, I worked at a restaurant in Myrtle Beach for two years before I realized that it was owned by the mafia. They are out there man, they are just in cognito.
