Would I be cheaper buying one from a Pet store or the Butchers?

A lot of feed stores have rabbits really cheap (mostly leftover from Easter). I saw some just the other day at one of my local feed stores... poor little guys were out there shivering in the cold! Check your local newspaper and craigslist... people give away bunnies all the time.

Honestly though, your best bet for a pet rabbit (especially if it's to be a house rabbit) is to adopt from your local shelter. They're generally inexpensive and have often been fixed, which makes them MUCH better pets. I adopted my boy when he was about 4 months old and he was fixed. He's never sprayed or showed any aggression and he uses his litterbox PERFECTLY!

Good luck! For lots of great rabbit info, check out www.rabbit.org.

I don't know the going price for rabbit at the butcher shop, but I'm sure it is cheaper than at a pet store. Also, it will already be dressed and ready for the frying pan.

I suggest you go to the closest feed/seed mill and ask if there are any rabbit growers in your area. Rabbit Chow is a specialty item and they should have a list of customers who buy it. By purchasing rabbits from a grower, the rabbit will: 1. Be at the correct age for slaughter. 2. Be a breed of rabbit that is bred for meat production (New Zealand Whites and Californians are popular). 3. Definitely a lot cheaper than buying from pet store or butcher.

Rabbits taste great! They are very high in protein. High in fiber. Low in fat. Low in cholesterol. All white meat. Good luck on hunting wabbits!

Getting a rabbit from a pet store is like getting ripped off. They are prices 2-3x what a breeder would charge.

You can find a rabbit from a breeder for maybe $5-10. Try a rabbit show. Lots of people have pets for sale. There will also be cage dealers. And rabbit feed is cheapest when you buy a 50lb bag of Purina or Heinhold at $10 or so.

At first, a meat rabbit would be cheaper, but it would eat twice as much as a smaller rabbit you could find at a pet store. Of course, if you want a large breed anyway, a meat rabbit is a fine choice. They do tend to spray, and they haven't been socialized as kittens, though you'll be able to get one that's still fairly young and trainable.

ha ha. Are you kidding about the butcher thing. Anyhow if you are really interest we got ours for $30 at a petstore. But of course the cage and toys and bedding (care fresh) litter boxes, food, bowls. It really did add up.
